Annascaul village and the lake holds a lot of childhood memories for me as we spent most of holidays here as kids, a tradition I have tried to continue with my own. The lake  is located in the mountains behind Annascaul on the Dingle peninsula in Kerry.

Access is via  a road on the Dingle side of Annascaul just after the  bridge and just follow the signs up to the lake were there is some  parking (see attached map). There are great hikes from this location if you want to travel back the valley and up into the hills and are quite easy and accessible at the lower levels. 

The light wasn’t great on any of the days I was there with the camera unfortunately so a lot of the images  I have kept B&W. When planning a visit to the lake for photography consider that the lake will be in shade at dawn for much of the summer, but sunset is behind the lake which could give good sky interest if you’re lucky. These images are a few I have taken over the last 2 years on 2 separate holidays to the area.

In terms of interesting things to shoot, there are plenty with wind sweep trees , waterfalls and flora as well as the lake itself, which usually jet black in colour. One not so pleasant experience was the midges , basically ran me out of the place on one visit, try and visit with a bit of wind will help if you intend to stay for a while.  

The waterfall pictured here is behind the lake, possibly 1Km back, just follow the trail up. This view point was a bit tricky to get to so avoid if wet under foot.

Its a place I will return to again and hopefully do a proper hike behind the lake to explore it properly.
