These posts usually take a number of visits to a location, to really get a feel for a place and try and come up with a few worth while images. In this case it’s a one off visit. I took a trip to the Saltee islands to photograph some sea birds, unfortunately it was  abandoned due to the fact that the skipper of the ferry fell into the water on retrieval of the rib to get us ashore. Luckily the incident didn’t escalate into something more serious but the fact that the trip had to be cancelled was disappointing as it was something I had been planning for a while.

That left me with a day that I had planned for photography and now I had no idea what to do. Ended up heading for the Portlairge wreck something that I wanted to visit at some point, but I wanted to photograph at high tide and hopefully in fog to try and get as simple an image as possible, inspired by a great photograph taken by Brian McDonald linked here .

As it happened I had nothing but clear blue skies in mid day sun and the tide fully out. I decided to try and shoot it in Infrared and convert to B&W later which suited the less than ideal high contrast conditions and also to kill some time while the tide came in around the wreck. Also didnt have a polariser which didn’t help. I waited about 3 hours for the tide to come in and after making a big effort to stay at sea level I feel the shot at the side of the road was probably as good.
